It is interesting to see and hear of individuals who are currently in certain subcultures and how that relates to them specifically. Studies that have been done for this particular subculture and subcultures similar to this one have always been fascinating to me, because it gives you a better appreciation to the efforts, movements, and languages happening within these sorts of groups. I agree with Brett as he notes Professor Bolger's thoughts in that the church can work in these subcultures in a similar fashion in regards to being relevant in their text and their context.

Week 10-Revised outline of final paper

Moving forward in this project, I will take a closer look at each model for this project (the synthetic and transcendental models). I think both of these models will be useful to appropriately identify the youth culture today in the midst of the influence of popular culture. The synthetic model will guide my thoughts and my writings because the model gives us a better idea of the conversations and movements that occur within human beings and will give me a better understanding of those conversations with this model. The transcendental model will also guide me in this project because the model exists to bring authenticity and transparency with the parties involved. I think this model gives appropriate examples that will enable me to have a better understanding of this model and how it relates to youth culture and the influence of popular culture.

I will also continue to use other conversations and movements from my experiences with students currently to portray a better grasp on the texts from Bevans, but texts from Barker as well.

This is a very sensitive subject and I want to do my best to portray the influences of the popular culture on the jr high student (youth) culture today. As we move forward in our lives, we need to always remember that it is because of Christ that we live. To live for others, to be a servant, to act justly, to love one another, to put others before ourselves, focus on the Scriptures, and love God. Go to the fragmos, the outsider, the fragmented. Put yourself in their space. Do your best to understand other cultures, ethnicities, societies, listen, and watch the movements there. What is language? Language is more than words. It is movements in space (no, not outer-space). Movements of people, art, music, trends, clothing, and much more. Watch carefully. Do you believe in myths? You may believe in them after you begin to reflect on many of the myths you live in everyday. Just wait, you'll figure it out. How has the media shaped your life? How have you shaped the media? Should we be agents of change? Can we be agents of change? Why? How? What can we do as followers of Christ in this world? 2 things. Love God and love people.

Week 10-Monday

We continued our conversation in class about The Merchants of Cool episodes and discussed the rock/punk culture. Is it rebellion? Expression of emotions? What is it with this culture that students are attracted to it? Who is really understanding the youth culture today? As we have discussed in class the last several days, is it: the producers, the audience, everyday life, or texts? All four of these elements are unique, yet have huge implications on the youth culture. Ultimately I think the audience (being the youth) has the largest impact on trends, fashion, and music. They are the ones who are setting the standard almost. Counter to that suggestion, some would say its the producers who have the greatest impact on the youth culture. What they produce, distribute, and sell has huge implications as well. So what is really going on? Who is doing what? Many of these questions and more should be asked and talked about.

Week 9-Revised Outline of Final Paper

This section of my revised outline was accidentally not included on my previous post. The models that I have chosen for the paper will give the audience and myself a better understanding of jr high student culture alongside popular culture. The focus will be the movements of jr high student culture influenced by popular culture and the churches response to this culture.

Since the setting is in Southern California, the student culture is heavily influenced by Hollywood, music, art, film, sex, and so forth. Further, one of the examples I will focus with will include the student culture and the popular show, Wicked. This is a heavy influence that I observe in many of my jr highers and it is interesting to see a connection with them and this show. I actually just saw the show and I am looking forward to conversations with my students.

For the purposes of this project I will focus my energy on the student culture, specifically the jr. high student culture, and pop culture. I agree that the Western Culture almost seems tainted in a sense. That we have a very narrow view of spirituality and spiritual expressions. I loved the Magnolia quote. I couldn't have chosen a better quote that fits with life everlasting. It's true, we may "think" we're done with the past, but the reality of it is the past isn't finished with us. We constantly live in a posture that is positioned around the movements of the past rather than moving forward in the present. We must come to the reality that we are all hurting and suffering in some way, so let's not run away from that thought. It is real and we must acknowledge that! We can reflect upon things from the past, let's learn from them, let's those experiences shape us and challenge us to be people of change for change.

Week 9-Cobb, Chapter 9 (Life Everlasting)

"What we do in life, echoes in eternity." This coined quote from the movie Gladiator, speaks volumes and brings us back to the reality of this life. We are people living here on Earth, in pursuit of love, a career, peace, wealth, paradise, or whatever one may be pursuing and through these pursuits we make decisions, hopefully decisions that are focused on Christ. So life is precious and valuable. How does one want to reflect back and celebrate when one passes away? As Cobb described, much of the Christian faith, and many religions, is based on alpha and omega myths. These myths or even thoughts are intentionally giving us visualizations and experiences in order to prepare us for death. So what are we doing with our lives? Are we merely just wasting away? Pursuing Christ? Pursuing individualistic desires? Community desires? Many of these questions one may ask as they live life and think about making changes if necessary.

Week 9-Bevans, Chapter 9 (The Countercultural Model)

To some individuals, this model may seem like an anticultural model, however I think this model is interested in the conversations within the human context and the context within building community with others. The countercultural model exists to specifically engage human beings with the specific intention of proclaiming the gospel of truth and continuing to understand the culture and it's context. Bevans stated it right when he said the gospel encounters or engages the human context, by its concretization or incarnation in the Christian community, the church. We must be a people of God who desires deeply to engage in any culture and seek the heart of the King and live such lives that people see Christ being proclaimed. Newbigin states in this chapter that the priesthood of all believers has to be exercised in the world. It is in the ordinary secular business of the world that the sacrifices of love and obedience are to be offered to God. We must be willing to be challenged by God and by the culture, but in turn to challenge culture with purpose and excitement for Christ.

Week 9-Wednesday

How has media influenced the youth culture? As we viewed today during class, "The Merchants of Cool," episodes of getting into the minds of the youth culture, brought some very upsetting and interesting views of this culture to my mind. As a person called into student ministry, I was taken back by these episodes. Because these marketing and research organizations do their research and try to "understand the youth culture," when really all they're doing is trying to find ways to make more money. They don't want to really understand this culture, rather they are planning ways to cash-in. Identity, self-concept, self-image, are all part of the youth culture and these three elements are applicable to the development of all students. Instead of trying to "cash-in" on their "coolness" or "likes" let's listen to them, feel their pain, help them find true identity. That identity being in Christ.

Week 9-Monday

As we continued in our conversation of Derrida, we talked about differance and then we discussed thoughts from Michel Foucault and power-knowledge. As we talked about power, we discussed that power as Marx would described is when some individuals have it and others didn't, but Foucault describes it as power not only constrained people, but enabled people. That power is in every relationship, any structure (neighborhood, relationship, company, etc) and that each entity at some level limits people. One main source of power is knowledge. Power brings knowledge and knowledge brings power! Are these thoughts just through the lens of Western institutions? Some may suggest this thought is very influenced by Western Culture. Some find their true identity in the amount of power they have and then ones with "knowledge" consider themselves to be ones with "legitimate" power and authority.

Week 8-Response to Aaron's Blog:

I was pleased to read that he noted the part of the African experience of slavery and how that manifested in spirituals then in gospel music and hymns. I think we have the natural tendency to think of salvation as a Western Culture phenomenon when in reality salvation has been seen through the lens of years and years of cultural practices, musicians, and certainly art. Salvation as Cobb describes is therapeutic to the human soul. It is something we all long to have and we even desire it for other people, don't we? Further, we even see salvation through the lens of redemptive violence as Aaron notes as well. Movies and music both paint this picture for all to see redemptive violence bring salvation.

Week 8-Final Paper Outline

For the purposes of this project I will focus my energy on the student culture, specifically the jr. high student culture, and pop culture. Within the transcendental model Lonergan writes, "Genuine objectivity is the fruit of authentic subjectivity." Objective knowledge, knowledge of the real, can only be achieved "by attaining authentic subjectivity. When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable to others, we essentially give a piece of ourselves to others, and allow others to know our deepest, darkest, in-most being. To some this will never happen due to the fear involved and to others this is a long process of opening up and becoming vulnerable. The process of becoming vulnerable to others is asking questions and lots of questions. A follower of Christ must ask questions. I think this is essential to the transcendental model! Asking questions is part of the experience, part of the journey, part of the movement towards Christ, and part of knowing who God is. I think this is a sign of true authenticity is asking these types of questions to yourself, but to others as well. You should have these types of conversations for your own growth and development. Cobb also expresses that the transcendental model easily admits the fact that any Christian who authentically tries to appropriate his or her faith is participating in the theologizing process and is doing genuine contextual theology.

Week 8- Cobb, Chapter 8 (Salvation)

As many followers of Christ would suggest, "Salvation is the beginning of new life with a relationship with Jesus Christ, full of obedience, trust, and love," but Cobb suggests that salvation is also sought in popular culture through the aid of traditional symbols and icons, although they are lifted from their original texts. Further, salvation can also be expressed through art, music, poetry, and other forms of religious activities. Have you ever thought of salvation through the entertainment industry? Initially you would think probably not, however every 30-second commercial, as Walter Davis explains it, "portrays a minidrama of sin and salvation: depicting evil, its source, who we must do to be saved." Television and the internet convince us of our need to be saved and seek salvation. Also, music has a large influence of our need of salvation. Further, Cobb suggests that we seek grace and self-transcendence through music, drugs, strenuous exercise, art, and the redemptive violence of our matinee heroes. As we see, salvation can be expressed and interpreted in many different ways and even through movies we see salvation expressions.

Week 8- Wednesday

Today during our in-class conversation we talked about justice and deconstruction. When we usually think about justice, what comes to mind? Do you initially think about redemptive actions, revenge, war, peace, kids, or is it something greater than that? I agree with Wes in that justice is not of ourselves, but something we gain. I think at some level we all desire to act justly or to see justice served, but that is not something of ourselves, but something we only receive. Further, as Wes suggested, justice is never finally actualized, it is sort of "already not yet." Just as Paul describes the kingdom of God, being here, but not yet. We continued in our conversation about deconstructing parts in our lives, the church, and Jesus. Question: What would Jesus deconstruct? Focus on the 'would' here. The first response to the 'would' is the Church. 'Would' the Church deconstruct anything or can we deconstruct the Church? Secondly, deconstruct yourself. What is meant here is that are you a realist, antirealist, or a hyper-realist. I would suggest most individuals are hyper-realists. Thinking and speaking in reality, but with an eye towards the promise, the kingdom of God. What do you need to deconstruct in your life? What are you currently deconstructing in your life?

Week 8-Monday

As we journey through life, do we consciously think about what we do day in and day out or even think about how we have another opportunity to live just one more day? The answer is probably no, but what if you began to think about how precious life is, how beautiful the birds sound in the morning, and how wonderful the sky looks in the morning. Now, imagine if you began to live that way, how would that change? And now think, what are things in your life that you hold true to you heart, that might be considered myths? What I mean is, we trust in the pursuit of happiness, freedom, and security (just to name a few), but as some level these may be myths. Roland Barthes believed in myths. He believed that we view things two ways: denotative and connotative. Denotative would mean the exact description of the meaning (whether that is text, a sign, picture, etc) and connotative means the searching for more than just the meaning. What is the problem with myths? That's a question for you to think about. So we close with a thought from one of my classmates and I quote:

"Oxyclean is the shit!"

Enough said.

Week 7-Response to Joe's Blog:

I appreciated Joe's comments in regards to youth culture and youth subcultures. One of things that still baffles me, is the attraction to facebook and myspace. I think there is something to be said when students would rather communicate emotional, mental, or spiritual on the website. There seems to be some sort of "safety" to the whole thing. I think one of the reasons why students are so attracted to these online communities is for two reasons: one being it is a safe place for them to be in and two it is the only world they feel like people can relate to them. Students desire to be heard and it seems as though they feel the only way they will be heard is through the internet. Technology has evolved into this huge machine that we haven't fully tapped into, but to students this is their life and they love to be connected to someone or something on the internet. Further, text messaging is now the primary source of communication for students and again it is a safe space for them, to get away, and continue to live in their world without any interruptions from adults.

Week 7-Barker, Chapter 14 (Cultural Politics and Cultural Policy)

As we have all experienced and currently experience is cultural politics and policies; and it is with these influences that create tension and even disrupts our ability to live in society at some levels. As we are affected by these influences, much of it has to do with political power, which Barker identifies as social regulation that is productive of the self, enables some kinds of knowledge and identities to exist and not others. And power is usually translated into authority and leadership, but this isn't always a good thing for society. Further, we understand different types of people exist through cultural politics and policies, such as intellectuals. To note here, Antonio Gramscian describes traditional and organic intellectuals as individuals who are active in our culture, but play very different roles. How does an individual identify with political decisions being determined within cultural politics and policies? We see movements and languages transforming because of the influence of power and politics, however, as discussed previously in the text on identity, where does an individual find their "true" identity when we see differences in beliefs, ethical and moral standards? Hall suggests an individual's identity or self-discovery are merely fictions of temporary meaning. Our culture continues to struggle with this issue of cultural power and in turn we discover governmentality ultimately creates institutionalized forces and further challenges of power.

Week 7- Barker, Chapter 13 (Youth, Style, and Resistance)

Cultural studies has found that youth (which may include children, adolescents, and students ranging from 6th-12th grade and even college), is one of the most misunderstood cultures. Barker has captured some of the conversations that are being talked about and need to be critically addressed further because it is the "youth" that will be the future. I have been studying and doing research of the student culture (youth culture) for a few years and it amazes me how much hurt, pain, and suffering these individuals are experiencing. As Paul Willis suggests, young people are active, creative, and symbolically productive in relation to their youth culture. However, the downside to a culture that is active and creative is the rise in consumerism among youth, which in turn creates even more concerns, issues, and further conversations. One of the main issues vaguely touched upon by Barker, is the level of authenticity of the youth culture. Meaning, the youth culture can easily sense authentic and transparent individuals, and this is something many people aren't writing about or researching, but I think it is something desperately needed to be analyzed and critiqued. I think the "depth model" can be a useful model and I would even suggest it be a model used more frequently if used properly. The youth subculture is the central reason why I am pursuing further education and desiring to be a student pastor.

Week 7-Bevans, Chapter 7 (The Synthetic Model)

The synthetic model or as some have described as "the dialogical model" or "the conversational model." I like how Bevans gives us these other interpretations, because I think that is exactly what the synthetic model is, the opportunity for others to be in conversation about a particular situation or thought and allows the flexibility for conversations to happen frequently. Further, Bevans suggests the synthetic model would say that it is only when women and men are in dialogue that we have true human growth. I think this certainly rings true, because as human beings that are created to be in relationship with other human beings and God, we must communicate with each other in order to build relationships, talk about each other's stories, adventure with others through conversation, and journey with God. The synthetic model includes experiences of the past, the present (including social location and change), and influences of other contexts and thoughts. Influences, thoughts, and experiences all derive from the openness and dialogical privilege with others. The model is extensive, influential, and creative. A model that is used in our everyday lives and we may not even realize it.

Week 7-Cobb, Chapter 7 (Sin)

As the old saying, "We live in a fallen world," certainly rings true in our culture today and some have even suggested this generation has been the most effected and continues to feel the ramifications of this fallen world. Oh the paradise we could have lived in, however the reality of it all is that we live in this world and it is up to us (humanity) how we will exist for the rest of our lives. I pose this question, have we lost "paradise"? We have breathe, the opportunity to be creative, study, write, draw, travel, read, interact with people, and connect with nature. Some may suggest we do live in a paradise and others say you can only experience paradise if you travel to a remote island. Further, I think what we do here and now, as Cobb referenced Micah: to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God," described, will determine how we live now and how we will live for years to come. Sin has brought many into serious turmoil and others to live as though they are going to a funeral everyday of their life. We have a generation of people who desire to be set apart and have nothing to do with God or other human beings. How will we be a movement of people who walk humbly with God for other human beings who seek meaning in a world that is dirty, broken, and full of pain?

*Further thoughts* As described in Cobb, Gothic individuals, are people who think of this life as a waste, no meaning, no reason, no purpose, and no feeling experience hurt, pain, and brokenness. Interesting though, many people share those same feelings, but maybe aren't willing to express those emotions as Gothics. Now, the Gothic style is much more than wearing black or wearing makeup, to some it is the influence of books, movies, and music. Further, Cobb describes the Gothic style as separation...from society and from God. This was only one subculture described in this chapter, but there are many people who share these same expressions, interests, and influences. What will we do to help and influence others for the sake of Christ?

Week 7-Wednesday

Today was a fun experience because we were asked to develop some thoughts and ideas for two different situations using the Praxis Model as described in our readings. The two different situations included: developing and implementing a church plant within a subculture and the other was to create an "outreach ministry" from within a church that already exists. Our group came up with the "Mission Restaurant," which actually included both of these situations. We felt through the restaurant atmosphere we could meet the needs of the community with food and friendships, but also provide a space for simple conversations and even spiritual conversations. We would give individuals without jobs the opportunity to work at our restaurant and they can get on-site job training through different "classes." Such as budgeting, computer programs (basic computer skills) and much more. We also suggested giving students the opportunity to learn through these classes also, through music lessons, photo shop, etc. We addressed the need for there to be a cyclical response and conversation through these classes, during restaurant operating hours, and our Sunday gatherings as well.

just to be raw..... as much i have to aspirations sometimes to be this great writer/ professor/ intellectual.... none of that will bring me joy.... i think it is self-satisfying but once a achieve a little i'll always want more.... and when i really get my head and heart nsync with one another.... theres nothing else that would bring me greater joy than to give my life to love a group of people so that they know their life was not lived in vain and that they are loved.... i honestly believe that if i have that i could not be insatiable.... so i'll be there.... maybe not forever.... but i'm coming

thoughts from a friend moving across the country!

Week 7-Monday

"Language works like a game of chess." The quote of the afternoon during our in-class conversations. It was interesting to see such a unique picture painted before our eyes about the importance of language, the difference in Langue and Parol, and how that affects and effects each one of us. I like what we talked about later on in the class about how language constructs its meaning from other languages and the difference begins to determine the difference between languages. Further, meaning comes from the differences. Also, language is a tool rather than a mirror. This is so true because language should be identified with uniqueness, meaning, difference, and viewed in such a way that not everyone sees the same thing or describes things the same!

Week 6- Response to Simon's Blog:

Cobb does bring some interesting views to the table when relating the human nature to popular culture and the text challenges us to ask difficult questions about ourselves and questions about motivation, intention, and identity. Simon suggests there to be a general agreement that "simple people" understand reality a little closer than others might understand. I would argue that yes this may be true, but I would even suggest the ones who help the "simple people" identity what "true reality" is, may also be influencing them in such a way that they understand a false sense of reality. Further, I would agree that technology has had huge implications on our lives as we understand culture and movements throughout history and even in our day to day lives. It is kind of sad how much we rely on technology for answers, theories, and even meaning, however technology has given us the opportunity to do further research, expound upon our understanding of human history and life, tendencies, and cultural movements.

Week 6-Barker, Chapter 12 (Cultural Space and Urban Place)

"Home...is a manifestation of an investment of meaning in space. It is a clim we make about a place. It is constructed through social relations which are both internal and external and constantly shifting in their power relations (Silverstone, 1994)." Is home constituted as a place of relaxation? Maybe a space that is private or public? Is space considered to be sacred? Should it be? Should "our" space be ours and not be interrupted by others? As we look further into the intimacy of space and place, we journey to discover that our space has changed and morphed into something we may not be comfortable being in. Now that we are living in the midst of an incredible technological age, it seems to be difficult to find a sense of peace in a "myspace world." And we come to the reality of it all and find that subcultures are being developed throughout cities, web-communities, and we find comfort in different situations depending on your space.

Week 6-Barker, Chapter 11 (Television, Texts, and Audiences)

Our creativity, thought-process, key influential beliefs and theories, almost all stem from the influence of multi-media corporations who broadcast globally "issues" and "concerns" that are relevant to humanity. It is because of this influence we are seeing a rise in political and social movements and getting involved in global matters. However, I would also suggest that the "simple consumer" is understands what these multi-media corporations want you to consume for your own understanding of global issues and concerns. We need to do better research for ourselves, find new avenues of finding information, understand society and culture on another level that hasn't been tapped into fully, and begin to have these conversations not with our television, but with others. Texts that are perceived on the television may not always be true, so step forward for humanity's sake and make a difference, because we are individuals among other individuals who need to know the truth, the truth of God's fingerprints and God's story being revealed among us.

Week 6-Cobb, Chapter 6 (Human Nature)

"Simulation of Identity," is an interesting concept when analyzing the human nature because the simulation of identity is the process of consuming a particular "image" and coming to the understanding that this new "identity" is 'who I am," however it is merely a false sense of identity. An image created and consumed so that the individual lives their life in something else. So if we are the image of God and as some have described, a "reflection" of God than why do we constantly seek false identities, why do we find our self-concept in magazines, clothes, furniture, and money? We should reflect God with honor, respect, humility, power, adventure, and love. We must discover ourselves, just as Augustine suggests in his Confessions, to seek out the mysteries of our true identity and I would take it further and suggest to seek out the mystery of God for our identity. Culture desires that we look to the elitist for our discoveries, why don't we change that mode of thinking and seek out God's discoveries?

Week 6-Bevans, Chapter 6 (The Praxis Model)

I love how Philip Berryman referred to the word "praxis by Paulo Freire as, praxis is "action with reflection." Also it is reflected-upon action and acted-upon reflection. In contextual theology and living in society, praxis and the praxis model must be used not only in reflective meanings, but taken further into action. Knowledge and academics are good, but what good are they if one can't put them into practice? In whatever context we are in, the praxis model gives us the opportunity to seek truth with knowledge to put into action, because as a follower of Christ who lives by faith in God, my faith is still without action. Further, I think God calls us to action in our lives and so the praxis model brings us to the understanding to have faith, but take it a step further and live a contagious life for God with God by faith.

Forest Home Winter Camp 2008!

Check out this video we made of our experience!

Enjoy!

Dance with me?

This is a powerful video that we all need to watch. I naturally gravitated towards these topics because as we talked about first and second modernity I couldn't help but think how critical both of these movements have been for the last several years. We see a common trend in our culture: efficient, "my way," quick, private, etc. We literally can go through our day and not speak to a human being, why is this? Are we so intrigued with our own self-worth and self-promise that we completely shut out the rest of the world around us? Possibly. I lean to the side that would suggest, probably. Through radical changes over the last 20-30 years with technology, machinery, new and improved ways of doing things, we interact so much less.

Further thoughts:

McDonald's is not helping. They give us the opportunity to have it "our way" and move on throughout the day with more of a mentality to be more efficient, get things done, and worry about myself. Now is it wrong to get things done with more of an efficient manner? No. However, I would suggest though, there are things in this life that hold greater importance than doing things or even receiving things at a faster pace. Naturally, humanity enjoys going at a fast pace, producing and consuming things faster, especially in the business world when you must be aware of market trends, cutting-edge products, and consumer tendencies. Has McDonald's shown us a new way of producing a product with the same result every time? Yes, but some of us are realists and things just don't come out the same every-time, some may suggest it is called living life.

Week 6-Monday

Today was one of the most difficult classes because we were asked to create a situation in which we would use the anthropological model. This was difficult because it seemed as though we were right on the border of the anthropological model and translation model, because both have similar characteristics. Our group used the Touchdown Jesus situation and focusing it specifically on Notre Dame football and how we could see God here. The other groups had very creative ideas and made me realize what the anthropological model really represents and gave me a new appreciation of this model. I really enjoyed the in-class conversation that we had and I would love to have more of these conversations because it brings new thoughts and ideas to the table.

Week 5- Response to Todd's Blog:

I enjoyed Todd's thoughts on ethnicity, race, and nation. I thought it was interesting also that Barker raised some interesting thoughts about "switching of cultural codes." I would like to comment on his thoughts about "missional Christians might need to acculturate their identity." I find his thoughts intriguing, but something about it doesn't sit well with me. I'm not sure if we necessarily have to change our identity within different culture settings, yes of course at some level we might, but we must always remain with our identity in Christ. Now should we shift our identity depending on the situation? Maybe. This is a subject that we might be able to discuss further in our in-class conversations to get other classmates' views. Further, "boundary formation," I would agree is dehumanizing in many respects and this would a great conversation to have also.

Week 5, Barker, Chapter 10 (Sex, Subjectively, and Representation)

The previous chapter discussed that our identity is founded upon a few variables: race, ethnicity, and nation. According to Barker and many other femininities and masculinities as discussed in the text expresses that identity can also be founded upon sex and gender (female and male). It may be suggested these are based on social and cultural constructions and in an ever-changing culture, we must be aware of the dynamics of each of these variables because each variable has significant meaning to humanity. We have seen movements throughout history of males and females standing up for strong issues in an attempt to culturally represent his or her "gender" well. Further, Foucault suggests gender is historically and culturally specific, subject to radical discontinuities over time and across space. And so when we move forward into cultural studies, we need to understand key characteristics of masculinity and femininity because it could look vastly different depending on the culture you live in.

Week 5- Barker, Chapter 9 (Ethnicity, Race, and Nation)

Our race, ethnicity, and even our nation have created our identity whether we want to accept it or not. Historically, one could look at a nation, a city, or a state and identify its people either by the geographical location or the ethnicity of the people and in many places this still rings true, however in other places this does not. Barker describes ethnicity as a relationship concept divided into two areas: self-identification and social ascription. If our identity is found through our skin pigmentation, language, historical movements, etc. than how do we find our identity in Christ? Are we first a follower of Christ than an American or are we American first than a follower of Christ? (This is just one example). Even looking to the Old Testament as the Exiles experienced diaspora, (people scattered among many places), they didn't identify with true identity or community, because they were without any true representation of who they were at that moment. Wherever you are from, what language you may speak, or family background you may hold to; you have an identity that nobody can take and that identity has God's fingerprints all over it.

Week 5-Cobb, Chapter 5 (Images of God)

When we think about God, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Is it an experience, a feeling, maybe butterflies, or could it be a song? Even when we think beyond our signs and symbols, who is God to us? We see God portrayed in films, art, and also many artists sing about God in their songs. Cobb references to a Joan Osborne song, "One of Us," as the song depicts God as a person in human form who is living and breathing just as we are here on earth. Do we picture a God who is just like us? Do we see that? Further, we move into what Marx calls, "commodity fetishism," as this approach to viewing God elicits respect, devotion, and trepidation. Some of the more common fetishes for Christians include: crosses, bibles, Christian books, etc. Are we so entranced in our "things" that we miss who God is? Just recently a friend of mine asked me to draw a picture of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, and it was difficult, however it became clear how I picture God. I picture God as lighting, light that shines so bright that I can't look up or even open my eyes. So in the stories we read, the movies we watch, the theories that are presented, and songs we listen to, how do you picture God?

Week 5-Bevans, Chapter 5 (The Anthropological Model)

The anthropological model is defined as a model in which it gravitates towards finding and understanding of personal human meaning and relationships. Further, it desires to find social structures implemented within a particular culture and seeks to find a subject's identity. I think to adequately understand cultures, societies, and even meaning, the anthropological model would be helpful and bring us one step closer to understanding humanity. For Christ to be proclaimed in any culture we need to have a holistic view of the culture and understand the anthropos, the person or the people within that culture. How can we have a significant impact on a person's life if we don't desire to have a relationship with them? So that we can connect them with God's story. Humanity deserves to be known, to be needed, and to be loved. We (humanity) all have questions, concerns, and hurts, so God's people need to ready to be sent out in the name of Jesus for the anthropos.

Week 5-“Christ was a great revolutionary…Karl Marx would have subscribed to the Sermon on the Mount.” –Fidel Castro

Fidel Castro and Karl Marx may have taken Christ as a revolutionary who was an individual with authoritative power. Maybe they agree with the thoughts of others from the Sermon on the Mount, in which if you were to pay attention to the poor and the needy, maybe Marx would see that if we were concerned with all people, than yeah he might support Christ. However, there are some differences in which how power was displayed, used, and how power was practiced. Do these “revolutionaries” simply want to make a difference for others? I think they have made their mark in history, but it looks very different. Jesus says, “love your enemies,” which was completely counter-cultural and not what a revolutionary would suggest. What can we learn from this conversation? What are some of the similarities that we see here? What are the differences? Why would Fidel even say this? These are some of the questions proposed during our lecture. Interesting thoughts for us to ponder.

Week 5-Monday

Today's class was an interesting class as we were asked to implement the translation model into a practical theological way and this was not an easy project. Interesting about the translation model is that it focuses much further than just translating word for word in context of the Gospel, but it is also sensitive to meaning, feeling, and expression. It was fascinating to hear other groups in the class explain their thoughts on the translation model and how they would strategically reach people in the name of Jesus. I think collectively all the groups had a different way of looking at this model and I would suggest that the translation model is one of the most significant models Bevans provides. This model must be used very carefully when understanding other cultures and one of the things we discussed as a group was to deconstruct everything and construct it again to bring the entire picture into focus.

Week 4- Barker, Chapter 8 (Subjectivity & Identity)

It may be suggested that our identity is established in others. Barker suggests that we live our lives in the context of social relationships with others. I think this rings true for all people; that we were created to be in relationships and we actually even move from an individualistic state of being to experiencing life with people. Adventuring through life with God and living in community with people around you. Further, Foucault suggests that we are individuals who are products of power and we certainly have technology, social structures, and economic trends to display this. Meaning, language, social structures are all means of our subjectivity and identity. In a fragmented world how will our identity be found? We have the opportunity to be an agent of change in a positive light if we so choose and one of the key elements of change is understanding cultural languages.

Week 4-Barker, Chapter 7 (Enter Postmodernism):

Living within a society that values change (whether that relates to economic growth, politics, or social structures) at some level we find ourselves in the midst of time that seeks to find identity and functionality. Modernism (as described by Barker) is a "structure of feeling" that involves pace, change, ambiguity, risk, and more. Further, many modernists have concluded we live in a world that is "trying to find itself" and trying to find a sense of meaning. Then the movement into postmodernism suggests that this is a time of transition of economics, social, and cultural patterns that will shape our future. When I read about it artistic movements and these concepts (modernism/postmodernism) I can't help but wonder what am I doing to contribute to this radically-changing world for the kingdom of God, for people in search of higher truths and realities?

*further thoughts*

Wow. Tillich did have some good thoughts and suggestions for both sides of these issues. I loved Harmony's words, "...to see God through things that are beautiful in nature and art." I tend to think we forget about praising God and being in awe of the Creator simply by viewing the things around us. I agree that both faiths are necessary for a person who is following Jesus. Art is such an incredible form of creativity that I wish I would have been taking more of an appreciation for art years ago rather than just recently. We may miss what God is doing if we don't stop and breathe in the goodness of God.

Week 4-Wednesday

Marxism was a topic I didn't know about until our reading for class and then our in-class conversations. One of the things that struck me as interesting during class today was that we were able to discuss this movement in history without any "theological" language, but this is a good thing because it is refreshing to hear simple conversation among each other. This movement was very interesting in that it created a movement of people in society that Marx believed one could see their economic condition and transform their identity. This is interesting because it seemed as though you were in the lower class or upper class and if you were in the lower class who wanted to transform your identity to be something greater, how would you do that? As we explored in class, one could sell land, machinery, or labor, but this was a time that resources were minimal and everything you had was very valuable. This was certainly a tough time in history. Your success was measured on what you had, what you could provide, and how you could use the resources you owned.

Week 4-Cobb Chapter 4 (Theological Tools)

As followers of Christ, what are some of the most essential elements that we hold near and dear to our hearts? When we think of our faith in the Lord some of us might think of the cross, the kingdom of God, the Holy Spirit, beautiful music, or maybe we think about literature. But we must ask ourselves this question, what are we most concerned about when he comes to our relationship with God? Are we concerned about the last "Christian" trends, languages, movements? Or are we concerned with proclaiming the Gospel to people, living life with people in community, eating with the homeless, experiencing God with people who don't know God? I think we all are concerned with a little bit of all these things. Even moving into art, music, the Earth, these are all concerns of God and created by God, so I think at some level we should be concerned. Do we concern ourselves with symbols and myths in our lives? I think if we believe in a triune God (not a religion) who is mysterious in his ways and we see symbols every moment of our lives, then yes, we are concerned about those. I'm specifically suggesting that being "concerned" with something is good and creates a balance as we journey with God.

Week 4-Bevans, Chapter 4 (The Translation Model)

For an individual to contextually translate a manuscript, a passage of Scripture, or any document related to history. We will focus on the Christian supracultural or supracontextual. In this section, Kraft suggests that if anyone does a word-for-word translation they are misunderstanding the nature of the language and Bevans continues to suggest that any translation must understand the meaning of the text, not just the words and grammar, but to capture the entire moment in that context. To have not only a theological approach, but just as important to have an anthropological approach in which a person understands the people, the movements, the languages, the feelings, and the emotion of the text. I think this is so key when a person is doing any type of translation, especially for individuals preaching the gospel to people. We must not simply "proof text," but have a holistic approach to the text. Understand what is going on at that moment in history. We must be sensitive to all cultures, languages, and people involved in our translation so that we don't miss the picture. Lastly, another interesting way we can use this model is by decontextualize the literature and then contextualize the literature again. This approach is suggested to arrive a the supracultural message to bring the entire picture and meaning into focus. I think to decontextualize material could be a good thing, but at the same time we need to be careful that when we contextualize the material back that we don't miss the true meaning because of our influences.

Week 4-Monday:

What is the Emerging Church? The topic of our conversation and it was very interesting to hear other church leaders from the US and the UK express these movements within these church communities. We found through this Emerging Church movement is that people desire to be part of a community that is actively involved in the community (i.e. homeless individuals). It was interesting to hear that people began to desire a space to worship, live life together, eat together, and serve together. The reason why this is interesting is because I thought this was a smaller movement that you only read about and rarely practiced, but I was wrong in assuming that. We see all over the place, bundles of people and communities living life together for the glory of God. We also discussed we should have a holistic kingdom perspective which could be a radical movement of change in order for people to see God in the community with God and for God! My desire is that we would be a movement of people in the name of Jesus without any hesitation.

Week 3-Barker, Chapter 6 (A New World Disorder?)

In a radically-changing culture, we constantly run into one aspect that we can not ignore in order to move forward in society, change. Change is inevitable. Change is going to happen whether we like it or not. We can either accept change and prepare ourselves for the possibilities or we can ignore change, but it is still going to happen. As described here, Barker argues in a world of globalization and Post-Fordism, the New Times are becoming more of an influential aspect in our culture than ever before. We must acknowledge that we are living in the "New Times" and it may be suggested we are moving out of the "New Times," right now as well. Our society is changing rapidly due to the technological advances and is key to our social development. How we interact with people within our culture and outside our culture is determined upon technology. Globalization is the reason why we decide upon so many things in our every day lives. Do we realize this? Do we understand the impact of globalization? Do we have a contextual concept of globalization or do we merely have a Western view of globalization? One may suggest that these topics have nothing to do with each other, however Barker has explored the side of Science and the side of Culture and has found there are many significant attributes within Science that have effects within Culture. Further, Bevans argues the physical, mental, and emotional state of individuals in culture and how that has been affected and ultimately effects not only other individuals, but the movement within a culture, the language, the alienation of other people, and so on. Historically, people have made decisions that seemed correct within a particular culture in that context that and Barker suggests that the development of our brains have actually created a foundation for culture and has evolved greatly. Solutions, conflict, cultural development, expectations, are all resulting from our competitive nature as people looking to change, develop, and create something new within our culture or even to fight for traditional movements and languages.

Week 3, Response to Todd's Blog:

I agree alongside Todd and Bevans, the models that were briefly described I think would be very helpful depending on the context in which that particular model would be used. Todd is wise to say that depending on the sub-culture, would require a nuanced model, however I wonder if the models that were presented by Bevans are enough to address all areas within our culture and sub-cultures? At the same time, I agree that depending on that sub-culture would require special attention so to be sensitive to all languages and movements within that sub-culture. It is vital that people proclaiming the truth of God to other people, must do their homework on that culture or sub-culture in order to build strong relationships that will continue to develop and grow. Bevans' models are important and useful and we should take into account that these models are being expressed locally and globally teaming with God and accomplishing his dreams.

Week 3-Cobb, Chapter 3 (Theology and Culture)

When we think about cultural studies with theological reflection, we must note the importance of how complex an issue this may be, but that's what brings questions, more thoughts, and more conversations about theology and culture. When we study culture with a theological perspective we must be sensitive to all cultural elements involved. Cobb notes from Anthony Pinn, "Cultural studies directs us to understand that a fuller appreciation of the vital and complex life of a society requires an examination of the semiotic guerilla tactics of its subcultures..." I couldn't agree more with this thought because as society changes and evolves we must observe the movements that are happening and act accordingly. This even rings true with the theology of culture, the language and the movement of culture could be so radical we must understand what God is doing, what God has prepared and preparing, so followers of Jesus can serve and share God's story. Even with our theological reflection and theology of culture observations, we realize people within our society are pursuing other things for happiness and we need to be aware of that and show people what it means to find happiness in God.

Week 3- Wednesday:

I was really intrigued of the material that was presented from Fuellenbach. Actually, I think they can be very useful if they are used appropriately. I loved Bevans' suggested six model approach, but in particular I was drawn to the transcendental model. This model in focuses on a person's authentic relationship with Christ and how that person expresses their faith in the world. Are we a movement of people in the name of Jesus who are simply authentic people in a sinful and suffering world, who desire to share God's story of hope? This model would be valuable in the lives of individuals who need guidance or encouragement to live an authentic life with Christ. Bevans also notes that models do not bring a solution, but they can serve as an avenue for a person to begin to journey and adventure to bring more questions and maybe questions that bring answers. Do we model a transcendental model, a people of authenticity looking at the whole picture rather than just a piece? How can we implement a model that would bring life for others?

Week 3, Monday:MLK Day-thoughts and reflections:

"I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exhalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together." When we stop and think about this man and what he stood for, what he proclaimed, and what he desired, I rejoice and celebrate with this man as he desired for the glory of the Lord to be revealed. What a thought. In the midst Martin Luther King's inspiration speech, with the pressures of so many people, along with society, it is refreshing to hear such powerful words that are so passionate and full of confidence. And I wonder...what would society be like if he didn't stand up for what he believed to be true? What would our world look like if people didn't stand up for their faith in the Lord? We should desire to proclaim the name of the Lord with boldness and courage, just like Martin Luther King, Jr. And my hope is that you would always stand up for what you believe in, even if you're the only one standing!

Week 2-Response to Ben's post:

Ben brings up an interesting thought, "...but I wonder if it is wise to solely learn about culture from a western perspective." I think since the moment we started school, the western perspective was already ingrained in our lives and as we grow older of course our thoughts, opinions, concerns, and perspectives begin to shift one way or the other. Is it wise? Probably not. I think we should have a holistic and contextual approach to culture. Is there only one western culture? I think that western culture has evolved and taken on new appearances that the western culture is in itself one with many cultures. Also, to comment on Ben's questions regarding language and emotion, I think language and emotion play significant roles in our lives as Christians, especially ones living in western culture and I think our language could ultimately be the deciding factor for those individuals who are seeking for higher truth and meaning in life and the way we express those emotions play just as an important role as language. I think Ben brings up some interesting questions and thoughts for us to explore further.

Week 2-Barker, Chapter 3 & 4 (Questions of Culture and Ideology, Culture, Meaning, Knowledge: The Linguistic Turn in Cultural Studies)

Are we simply a culture that is comprised of "ego weakness and the Authoritarian Personality"? Adorno suggests that we are merely a culture that has been manipulated into the capitalistic approaches by corporations with strong political influence. He suggests that we are a culture that has participated in the illusions that have been fed to us. That instead of being a society trying to be more diversified, unique, or different, we have merely bought into these influences and conformed to those influences. Instead we see a movement of the creative realm, in which people are now realizing they can create art, fashion, etc., for the sake of people. Because people are creative and understand how people will react to certain influences and thoughts, and understanding that in more of a practical way.

What is language if it has no meaning? Some have suggested that cultural language has no meaning, but others would argue the opposite. Barker suggests that language constructs meaning. It structures which meanings can or cannot be deployed under determinate circumstances by speaking subjects. It seems that cultural language has been influenced by the meaning placed upon it. "The unconscious is a place of meaningful activity that works 'like a language'." Barker also suggests, "At the same time, language itself is dependent on the functioning of the brain." We tell ourselves that things are meant to mean something in a specific manner, but we place what has been translated in our language to be the meaning in which we process. So then what does it mean that our culture is based upon the meaning of our language? Have we misinterpreted language in such a way that we have lost meaning in our culture? This was an in-depth approach to cultural studies and thinking through language and meaning has become difficult to comprehend in context of our culture today.

Week 2-Cobb, Chapter 2 (Cultural Studies)

Do we live in a "hyperreality-driven" culture? Cobb gave several inclinations that we live in a culture that thrive off of aesthetically satisfying materials. One of the examples that we can all relate to are movies. Movies give us a sense of a new reality in which we can live another person's life. I would have to agree with Cobb and Jane Addams who argues that we actually live our lives in drama that is being performed as an art for us. We tend to live our lives in such a way that you have to ask yourself, "Am I living my life or someone else's life?" We are attracted to symbols, colors, music, art, dramas, and romance, but I wonder what we desire most out of life? Is it that we look at the elite of our culture today and strive to be more like them or are we satisfied in what God has blessed us with and take advantage of those opportunities? Another interesting thought that ties into this conversation is this idea of hegemony. "...the process of negotiation through which the oppressed are presented with the ideas around which they are expected to organize their lives..." This certainly rings true today in our Western culture. There seems to be this added expectation to live your life and if were to journey outside those expectations, you may be alienated altogether. So then, what expectations should we seek to fulfill? God's expectations or culture's society? Maybe we seek to fulfill both expectations to a certain degree.

Week 2-Bevans-Ch. 2:

What are some of the key issues when doing contextual theology? The question that arose from this chapter. Bevans had some great insight when we focus in on the "contextualization" of theology. When he recommended if one were to do a theological reflection of a particular culture within it's context he turned to Krikor Haleblian, as he suggested "the believing community in each culture must take ultimate responsibility for contextualizing the gospel, but there is a place and a need for professionals..." I couldn't agree more. We have such a narrow lens to look through when contextualizing culture and theology. And when we study cultures outside our "natural environment" we have perspectives and opinions that may be completely incorrect, however as Bevans suggested, with good research and study within the context of a particular culture and understanding a culture's language and movements, we may have the opportunity to evaluate further. Also, I pose this question, how much have we mixed Christianity and culture together to the point that we have lost the true identity of Christ and the Scriptures?

Week 2-Wednesday

"Jesus was looked upon as a Rabbi/Revolutionary!" -Professor Bolger. This was probably the coolest part of the class today as Professor Bolger expressed during our conversation by looking at the various ways others have viewed culture and how Jesus would view culture. Jesus did some pretty counter-cultural radical things during his life by simply telling his enemies he loves them and I ask this question, "Are we willing to do radical things for the sake of the movement of Christ and the kingdom of God?" Culture as we have expressed during the quarter thus far is very complex, but I wonder what our culture would look like by simply telling our enemies we love them?

Week 2- Monday

What is culture? The question presented by Professor Bolger. An interesting questions because you can talk about culture and describe culture, but you would still have many other ways of looking at culture. It was interesting to hear the other groups' responses how they viewed culture. Some it was more of a materialistic point of view, others more cognitive views, and others in between. I enjoyed reading and hearing more of the research that has been done and how others have defined culture. It was certainly an intriguing class. I think the idea of culture brings more questions and more thoughts that I'll be exploring throughout the quarter.

Week 1- Response to Harmony's blog:

What a great thought. God is the author of our lives, the Creator of the created and the reality that we live in is the reality created by God. She has an interesting thought when describing the "reality" that we all live in. A reality in which we are heavily influenced and impacted, which I agree is difficult to acknowledge. I think we are all on a journey of life and the life we live provides so many questions and those questions leading to more questions in hope of finding an answer. I think her thoughts on "reconsidering" everything is a good thing. If we don't invite change and challenge into our lives, it will simply hit us in the face and run right over us. I think she brings up a good question at the end from Bevans' text (God speaking to God's creation in different ways due to culture and time), is God unchanging? Maybe as we all journey through life we will come to the realization that God has always been preparing us for more and maybe it is us who need to realize God created culture that has the potential to change because God is the one who makes change.

Week 1- Cobb, Chapter 1 (Popular Culture):

Images, language, symbols, these are all contributors to our Western civilization currently and has actually been on the rise in recent years, but as Cobb suggested, Walt Disney, was the frontrunner in the imagination of one's status or perspective in life during The Depression. What is it that we are attracted to in our culture? Sure, we see things that catch our eye, something that may look appetizing to fill our stomachs, and the list goes on, but what is that we strive after to simply live life? He suggested culture as a way of life. He suggests that, "Each culture in the world are self-contained, coherent, homogenous, functioning organisms driven by its own peculiar genius." I would disagree that culture is simply an organism just functioning or self-contained. I don't think we just function, I think we (culture) adapt, change, multiply, reinvent, and live. Yes we live in a culture that exists, but do we want to just function driven by intelligence? Do we have a choice? Can we live in a culture or as Cobb describes "functioning in culture," with images that warrant our decision-making?

Week 1- Bevans, Chapter 1 (Contextual Theology)

An interesting read, until I found myself confused at the very end of the chapter as he writes, "Christian theologians need to do theology contextually because God is present and acts contextually." God acts contextually? I'm not sure if he was referring and describing that God acts in the context of people's cultures or God only acts in specifics contexts, but I am confused. However, I enjoyed his bold statement in the beginning as basically rebuked "theology" all together and helped the audience understand what it means to contextualize theologies, thoughts, and opinions about texts, criticisms, and the Scriptures. His argument in which the methods of Christianity in our Western Culture to others around the world may be viewed in their context as secular, religious, and even mythological is an interesting argument. Never would I have thought the Eucharist and the Incarnation of God be perceived other than images of God, the Father, the God who pursues our lives. Certainly a new challenge in my thought process.

Week 1- Barker, Chapter 1 (introduction to cultural studies):

Cultural studies is at the forefront of our existence. Many academic scholars and researchers have found that cultural studies is greater than a group of people in a particular environment, but that cultural studies includes language, interpretation, structuralism, post modern thoughts, and my favorite of cultural studies: deconstructionism. To have a firm grasp on culture, I think one must deconstruct theories of the past and have a holistic epistemological approach. Barker, I believe, explains in depth the heart of cultural studies, that being language. The source of structuralism, relationships, decision-making, our foundation is at the heart of our language. The language of the past and the language of the future will need to be critically analyzed and thought through to bring, as described by Barker, an ethnography as the description for which we base our examination of culture.

Week 1 Wednesday

I thought the most intriguing part of the class was when we began to discuss McGavrn's culture observations, questions, and concerns. I thought it was certainly intriguing to hear and listen how much the impact of the Western culture had with these "mission stations," and then the people who came to know Jesus would leave everything they had ever known. Part of me understands what it means to leave everything for Jesus, however on the other hand I'm curious as to why the "mission stations" didn't encourage them to build relationships in their tribes and share God's story within the context of their culture. I think the thought of one view=one civilization as we discussed in class at times feels very accurate in our culture today. Trends, language, personalities, etc all have huge implications on them and it certainly does within the church. We must move towards more of a holistic view of spirituality within our culture than ever-before.

Week 1 Monday

During our first class, I didn't know what to expect honestly. I knew about our professor and I knew his desire to equip people about culture, the missional church, and emerging churches, but wasn't really sure what to expect. However, after listening to Dr. Bolger's thoughts and some of his experiences I am totally stoked to hear more about society, different cultures, tendencies, and much more. One of the things that was surprising about class was the comparison about emerging churches vs. missional churches and how vastly different they are and how we need to look upon them carefully, critically, and analytically. Another aspect of the class that really caught my ear was asking the question(s) within the context of our culture and how shocking more questions, thoughts, and even concerns may arise. We need to understand what culture we live in and we must figure out how do we live within the culture as people pursuing Jesus.

this is my first post in a long time.

welcome back.

Greetings all! I hope you all are doing well!

What does it mean to really connect with people? This is the question that I presented to my students in the GPC Jr. High Student Ministry called The Route! I challenged them to desire to really connect with other people in their schools, neighborhoods, and communities! I wonder if we truly desired to connect with people, what would happen? If Christ were to be displayed throughout the entire world, what would happen? If people who are followers of Christ would truly desire to put others before themselves what would happen? Who knows. Maybe we will begin to truly apply the principles of the Scriptures in our own life and impact our world and our world will truly see people fall on their faces before the cross!

"Father God, send us out! Challenge us, put people before us who need you, who need to be challenged, give us the boldness and the courage to live up to a standard of holiness that you desire for each and every one of us who follow you to do! Lord God, strip us of the things in our lives that is wrong, hurting, disgusting, and inpure.
